Ever since I heard David Goggins speak as a guest on the Impact Theory podcast, I have been fascinated by his incredible mindset and unapologetically authentic personality.
Therefore, as soon as I found out that he was going to publish his autobiography “Can’t Hurt Me”, I told my boyfriend about it and he was so sweet as to preorder it and give it to me as a Christmas present.
“Can’t Hurt Me” is an autobiograpy about David Goggins that tells his inspiring life story and how he went from being at rock-bottom; obese, unhappy and spraying cockroaches for a living to becoming “the toughest man on earth”. Although he grew up being bullied, discriminated against and was abused by his father; both physically and mentally, he managed to defy the odds and turn his life around.

Instead of letting his mind take advantage of him, he constantly worked on his mindset and eventually became a Navy SEAL, an ultramarathon-runner, a former world record holder for the most pull-ups in 24 hours and much more.
Today, he is a speaker and inspires hundreds of thousands of people.
One of the reasons why he was able to transform his life was that he mastered his mindset like no other person I have ever heard of before and continuously decided to push past his limits.
What I Love About The Book
In my opinion, this is one of the personal development books that can REALLY change your life. Everything about it is just so genuine and it allows you to view your own life from a different perspective. According to David, when you think you are down, you are actually only 40 % done and still have 60% left and imagine what you could do if you made use of those 60%.
By telling his story, David Goggins also debunks the common belief that your past defines your future. He has an inspiring growth mindset and decided to no longer see himself as a victim of his circumstances, but as the powerful creator of his life. We can change our future at any moment by choosing to make a different choice in the now.
What I also found intriguing is David’s notion of motivation. According to him, “motivation is crap”. You may ask yourself “Why?”
Motivation is a non-sustainable form of energy – it comes and goes. I guess you have experienced this many times in your life and it’s totally normal. What’s really powerful is to have PURPOSE and DRIVE, which makes you go after your dreams no matter what.
THE POWER OF HAVING YOUR GOALS IN PLAIN SIGHT:
I love books that are not purely theoretical but also give practical tips that are applicable to life. So I really like that at the end of each chapter, there are challenges to complete that helped David Goggins on his own journey.
How often do we set goals and write them down but after some time we just forget about them and are not holding ourselves accountable anymore?
There is one challenge in his book, the so-called “Accountability Method”, that helps you to set small task in order to push you towards your goal.
Sounds great, right?
THIS IS HOW IT WORKS:
- You post sticky notes on your mirror (ideally your bathroom mirror) with action steps you can take to accomplish your goals
- Example: If your goal is to run a marathon, you can write a sticky note with “I can run a 5k” and post it on your mirror. Once you reach that goal, you can proudly remove it and post another sticky note that says “I can run 10k” and so on
The good thing is that you will proceed in small steps and, in turn, won’t be overwhelmed by the actual big goal. So step by step you will get closer to your goal and in our example, you will one day be able to run a marathon.
Plus, by looking into that mirror every day, you have your goals in plain sight. David also emphasizes that you should not be afraid of calling yourself out. So it is also recommended to also have sticky notes that are brutally honest and show you each day that you have to work on yourself.
You could for instance say “You’re fucking lazy”, “Get off your phone”, “You give up to soon” etc. Thereby, you stop lying to yourself, leave no room for excuses and you stop living a comfortable life that doesn’t serve you.
MY FINAL NOTE
I highly recommend picking up this book. It is super inspiring, contains so much wisdom and urges you to take action. I also follow David’s Instagram and Facebook pages it is exciting to see so many people commenting that the book has changed their life. Some of them even went from being overweight to becoming a marathon runner.
I love how empowering the book is and that it inspires you to be the best version of yourself and to put in the work in order to achieve your goals.
After reading the book, I developed a daily workout routine and haven’t looked back since.
There is also an audio version of the book which is amazing because there is added material and interviews with David after each chapter of the book.
